Waugh Mountain

The mountain that provides our main view is called Waugh. It is 11,710' tall and is highest peak in the South Park Hills Range.

I am not sure where the name came from. I understand "waugh" is a exclamation comment that was common to mountain men, and there was also a Frank Waugh that was instrumental in the set up of the National Forest systems. If anyone knows the origin for "our" mountains name please post.

Here are a couple of interesting links on Waugh Mountain. The first is a trip report by a group that snowshoed to the summit in 2005.

The other provides some stats on the peak. The ones I find interest are that although it is not even in the top 300 highest peaks in Colorado, it is 55th on the most prominent and it is the 79th most prominent in the lower 48 states.
